Scholarship Rules and How to Apply
The Karen Johnson Solo Scholarship provides up to $3,000 for flight training though the first solo and beyond to young women between ages 16-20 (at any time duding the calendar year) who want to learn to fly.
To apply for the scholarship, you must complete and submit the online application by 11:59 PM PST on July 1, 2024. The application includes an essay of up to 500 words. The 99s will announce the scholarship winner at the annual 99s Aviation Appreciation Dinner at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI, on July 23, 2024. We will notify the recipient in advance to allow time for arranging attendance, although attendance is not required.
The essay should describe:
Why the applicant wants to learn to fly.
How the applicant will apply her training.
Applicant’s flight training to date.
Applicant’s goals for the future.
Applicant’s experience or involvement in aviation-related activities
Applications will not be considered if:
The essay is longer than 500 words, excluding required identifying information.
The online application is not complete.
The scholarship funds can only be used toward an initial pilot's license and must be used by Sept 1, 2025.
The winner will be expected to provide a 400-1,000 word essay suitable for publcation in the 99s magazine to the scholarship committee at KJSoloScholarship@ninety-nines.org after her solo or after her check ride, sharing her training experiences and goals she has met.
The winner must join the Ninety-Nines as a student pilot prior to receipt of scholarship funds.
